Since Joshua turned a year old, we’ve really felt the need to change his space into more of a big boys room. We spent countless hours on Pinterest, talking with other moms, and figuring out how to create a minimal Scandinavian space of his very own. The first big decision we made was to give him two rooms plus the Jack + Jill bathroom that connected them. We converted one of our guest rooms into Joshua’s sleeping and relaxation room and made his old nursery into a Montessori style play room. Living in a condo in the city, not having a back yard, dealing with all the winter days in, and working from home all the time, we felt that a bigger area for him was a way better use of space rather than the two rooms we had for the occasional guests. Thankfully, it was pretty easy to get hubby on board once he heard “there won’t be toys all over the place anymore, only in his room” and from that moment on, I couldn’t focus on anything until I got this project done.
So we started planning his room from scratch, again. It was exciting and overwhelming all at the same time. When we designed his old nursery, we were able to find everything and get so much catered help from the staff at West Coast Kids, so I knew visiting their store was the perfect place to start.
That night I filled an online shopping cart (of waaaaaaay too much stuff) and screen shot all the items so I would be prepared for our trip into the store the next day. The second we walked in we were introduced to a member from the team that would help us create our dream space and all of my overwhelming feelings dissapeared. They listening to the importance of a montesorri core, the style we envision for the room, how the rest of our house would have to match the decor, and most importantly what we felt Joshua would need for his day to day activities. They were so experienced and eager to help, guiding us on what would work for Joshua’s personality, what items came in colors we wanted to stick to, the safety and materials of each product, how long it would take to order the items, etc. etc. etc.
It took one visit for us to put together a perfect space for Joshua and I’m so incredibly happy with the way that it turned out. It is such a joy to see him wake up every morning and run straight into his new room. And now that we’ve started his transition in sleeping on the floor bed, we have the perfect amount of space for a little brother or sister to join him in the other room one day.
