1. Be aware of what you consume:
The hardest thing I find about this app is having self awareness in it. So many of us feel pressures and jealousy on this social media platform without realizing that we are the ones in charge of what we consume. We make conscious decisions every single time we open up this app in where we spend our time and who we’ve decided adds value to our lives. I recently unfollowed 300+ people and it all stemmed from one thought I had late at night talking to Mathieu. If our son was surrounded by people who made him feel less than, insecure, not creative enough, smart enough, pretty enough. If he felt worst after being with them, what would we do? And you know what the simple answer was? Get him out of there. Put him in an environment where he feels love, positivity, and push to always be a better person. Surrounded by kindness, by those who are grateful, and who has goodness in their heart. And I realized- isn’t that the same thing as our consumption on social media? As many times as I close this app feeling less than- isn’t that just the same as being in an environment that isn’t good for me? We make our decisions, we choose our environment, and at the end of the day social media is just that. Be AWARE of what you consume, of who you give your time to every day, of the people that sprinkle their values and character in your life.
2. Work on your jealousy.
As humans we are jealous beings, whether it’s something little or something big, we covet, envy, boast, and show tons of pride. One thing that has helped me tremendously is a tip I heard on a podcast. When you feel jealous, when you feel “why can’t that be me,” PRAY. Shift your gear and pray for that person. For their continual success and for their happiness. Being happy for them will not take happiness away from your life. One of my favorite quotes is, “No one has ever become poor by giving,” and it is the same in spreading positivity.
3. Create content before consuming it.
Before you spend all that time scrolling your feed, looking through stories, before this app makes you feel anything- create. This doesn’t just apply to just bloggers, this is for anyone who has a social media acct. Whether you have 100 followers or 10,000, you have the ability to make one person’s day better. Share a quote, a tip, a friendly hello, a “just thinking of you,” or create an image, a blog post, something that has value in hopes of helping others. Create before you consume so that you realize your purpose and worth at the beginning of every day.
4. Connect; truly and genuinely
You know what the best feeling in the world is? Being a light in someones life. The absolute best moments I’ve had on this platform have been when I connected with someone, deeply. About pregnancy loss, about racism, about hardship in motherhood. Long conversations with a complete stranger that reminds me how much good, how much beauty there is in this world. And you know what never made a difference in my day? The amount of engagement I got on a photo. Remember that connection is our purpose on this earth, it is the beauty in our lives, and it’s the most incredible thing you’ll find in this app.
5. Take breaks.
Whether it’s one day a week, or even in waves of 1-2 weeks. Take a break. Just like you have holidays at work, breaks at school, you need a break. For yourself, your mind and soul, and your family. It is a great time to just be. To reflect and re-evaluate your purpose. I take a break every Friday and Saturday and it is my recharge. I look forward to them at the end of the week and can’t wait to get back into social media when it’s done. Breaks are so good for your mind.
